A new film by first time Writer/Director Gareth Edwards, MONSTERS!, will be released in theaters this fall.

Advanced notice of the film says it's an original story:
"Six years ago previously, a NASA probe returning to earth with samples of an alien life form, crashed over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear, and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"... The story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border."

While the plot of the film is original, the idea of an "invasion-before-the-story-starts" has been done before; first to come to mind is DISTRICT 9.

I'm (obviously) a HUGE Monster Movie fan, and I will run out to see this one ... no holds barred!

The site is very disjointed, often bazaar and somewhat confusing ...

I don't have the time to elaborate my thoughts it at this moment.

10 Good things about Cloverfield:

10. Monster Movie! Yay!
9. Lots of action and destruction!
8. Plenty of creative elements.
7. The mystery.
6. Believable story line.
5. Great soundtrack and end theme.
4. Record-breaker for theatrical release, weekend take, worldwide view, and DVD/Blu-ray sales!
3. The majority of those who have seen the film actually like it enough to vote a 7.5 on IMDb, and a 77% rating on the Tomatometer.
2. The first original American monster! (King Kong was dragged from Africa, and was more of a big monkey than a monster.)
1. The initial teaser/trailer and the viral marketing that followed.
(I don't think anything ever again will top what this team has done for the promotion of this movie.)

10 Bad things about Cloverfield:

10. The shaky cam, combined with the fact that HUD didn't know how to use it properly or when to turn it on and shut it off. Many viewers of the film actually became ill watching the movie!
9. Viewers unfamiliar with the viral were put off by much of the "mystery."
8. Viewers familiar with the viral were put off by the lack of any elements of the viral in relation to the film.
7. The movie was too short, and the end credits were too long.
6. While the film was very original, it still stuck to the same basic principals of a standard monster movie: i.e. Love interest; monster arrives; destruction ensues; military arrives; everybody runs; people we actually care about die one by one (in an orderly fashion); military questions its own methods of attack; military vehicle gets squashed with military personal on board; hero/heroin almost get away then find themselves face-to-face with said monster; kissy-kissy ending.
5. Nothing truly explained in the end.
4. The whole Ethan Haas crap, which many people began to follow and got bored with and then blamed the whole thing on the confusing Cloverfield viral and then just gave up, went to see Cloverfield and became even more confused!
3. The teaser/trailer stirred up just enough interest, but failed to mention there was not even a movie made! The date became a HUGE part of the viral, but, had the producers NOT locked themselves into a release date, and instead gave the movie a title (or something), they could have ironed out any inconsistencies involved with a break-neck work schedule and a half assed movie ... See: STAR TREK.

1. TIE: Any 9/11 references made by the media!
And ... The HATERS.

10 Obvious things about Cloverfield:

10. It's a MONSTER MOVIE! Get over it!
9. This is truly America's first "original" monster. Look it up.
8. While the title "CLOVERFIELD" makes little or no sense, it's been forever ingrained into the viewing audiences memory for life.
7. The originality of the film far exceeds any film before it. The nay-sayers scream "Godzilla vs Blair Witch" ... But, I beg to differ ... Blair Witch used several cameras, and Godzilla stands alone amongst any other monster movie ... Nothing will ever take Godzilla's crown away ... not even King Kong or MechaGodzilla!! (wiki it)
6. Formula, formula, formula ... Just like real estate. Cloverfield is a movie of "our time." Again, google, wiki, whatever ...
5. If you actually listened to the dialog, the parasites were dragging their victims to the monster for FOOD! The parasites lived off the monster ... the monster was too big; knocked too many buildings down; scared the sh!t out of everyone (including the military!!), but it was the parasites that kept it fed!
4. The movie was too short, and due to all the confusion during the viral faze (and a "set-in-stone" release date!), became entangled into something that it could NOT pull itself out of.
3. The three words I learned on my first day in film school: "Use the tripod." Yeah, the film was supposed to be as realistic as possible ... But, at the time of shooting, image stabilization is included in all consumer brand video camera devises.
2. Video camera batteries last for HOURS!!! This footage was only 84mins long, due to the fact the the tapes used in consumer model cameras max out at 90mins!
1. The original video footage was obviously converted to an SD card for "longevity."

The scariest component of the film?
Even if the monster is dead, the parasites continue to pull humans away from reality and "infect" them if they are attacked!

Do we need a sequel? No.
But, if America has found a new monster in Cloverfield, we need more to feast on.

What a joy it was today that Francesco Marciuliano honored us Cloverfield fans with this comic on the one year anniversary of the film's release on 1-18-08!

I know you all remember, this past Easter, Tom Wilson bid homage to our fine, dear, Mr. Grumpypants; the very same time Easter Eggs on the DVD lead us to believe the creature may be of extraterrestrial origins.

Also, in today's Funny's, Tom decided to show his dedication to J.J. by slipping in a very subtle piece:

While the face is recognizable ... The "Drink" is known only to die-hard Abrams fans.

Slusho! has been around since its first appearance on an episode of Alias in 2004 and is still growing in popularity!

A second siting of the frozen soft drink was seen during the trailer of Abrams' "mystery movie", worn by the brother of the lead protagonist, which spawned a nation-wide spread of T-Shirts, Laptops and Caps.

Televised "Heroes" fans may also remember seeing the drink referenced quite a few times.

Now, "word on the street" confirms that MTV obtained an interview with Abrams which claims Slusho! will make a brief appearance in his new Star Trek movie:

MTV: I couldn't help but notice the Slusho! reference from "Cloverfield" in the bar scene where Kirk first meets Uhura. Will we see other J.J.-isms peppered throughout the film?

J.J. Abrams: No. That was sort of the only one, and it was just sort of a goof.

Wow! Had this package been left unattended on my doorstep while I was at work, I think someone would have had themselves a very odd Christmas!

This season, as I battle a retail career during a commercialized recession; a midlife understanding of my mortality; and my many thanks that my little sister pulled though brain surgery (literally), I can go peacefully to my deathbed knowing full well that I still desire "things."

While one can hardly notice my set of "Horrified B-Movie Victims" propping the damn thing up, (or the grill outside the back door - this thing's HUGE!) ... or the $118.08 I paid for this "piece of plastic," it is still a week's worth of groceries, a moderate vehicle repair, or a single medical co-pay ... Am I not the only one glued to material objects?

Huddled in the corner of my self conscious, the battle for creativity is fought ultimately by reality.

Do I sell myself out for just another old man's crusade?
Or, do I surround myself with things that just make me happy?
